The 80/20 Rule

80/20 Rule Chalene Johnson www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com

I want to quickly share a piece of advice with you. I relate it to health and fitness, but you could change it to what makes sense to you!

I was listening to a podcast from Chalene Johnson while I was traveling for work today and she talked about the 80/20 Rule.  This spoke to me!!

If you are hitting something 100% of the time, you might not be living a FULL life.  Make it your goal to eat clean and hit your workouts 80% of the time.  If you do this, you are still doing more that most people.  If you have this mindset, then it is ok to have that Happy Meal or miss that one workout the other 20%.  Things come up, lives are hectic...IT HAPPENS.  But, it doesn't mean that you give up.  It doesn't mean that you stop pushing yourself.  You have got to keep working for what you want!  If you do it for long enough, it becomes second nature to you and it comes naturally.  I hope to get there with my workouts and eating habits.  Some days are still a struggle, but I continue to push play and I continue to make healthy choices because I remind myself of how much better I feel when I do.  It usually only takes about 10 minutes into the workout for me forget I didn't want to start.  It's all about a healthy balance!

When you have a reason, your why, it helps you keep your focus.

Fall Fashion: Dress and Boots

eShakti Florence Dress Fall Boots www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com

It's officially FALL, but here in Florida the temperatures are still a little warm.  I'm hoping in the next few weeks, it will start to cool down.  I love fall fashion.  Cozy sweaters, boots, scarves...I'm ready for you!

eShakti Florence Dress Fall Boots www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com

A dress with a pair boots is one of my go-to outfits.  So easy!  This dress is the perfect color for fall, the burnt orange reminds me of fall leaves.  The dress fits perfectly and I love the side pockets.  I paired it with a pair of booties for the perfect fall look.  Who doesn't love a little lace?

Treat and Protect Your Hair

My hair puts up with a lot of stress.  I color my hair, blow dry it, straighten it, and sometimes curl it.  Plus, with summer, the sun and water can dry it out also.

InstaNaturals Argan Oil Hair Mask www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com

After my workout last Saturday morning, I added in InstaNatural's Argan Oil Hair Mask to my shower routine.  I washed my hair as usual first.  After showering, I towel dried my hair and dispersed the mask throughout all of my hair from the scalp to the ends.  I left the mask on my hair for 15 minutes, the maximum amount of time suggested.  I also have a towel wrap that I used at this time.  Then I hopped back in the shower and rinsed the mask out.

I styled my hair like normal and was so pleased with my results!  My hair was softer and smoother and even felt fuller.  The argan oil smells great and never made my hair feel greasy.  The ingredients on the tub are all natural and organic.  I will definitely be adding this to my beauty routine once a week.

Have you ever used a hair mask before? Or is there something else you do to treat and protect your hair?

Berry Good Morning Smoothie

KissMe Organics Matcha Green Tea Smoothie www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com
Matcha green tea is like a super green tea.  It lets you enjoy all of the benefits of green tea in a wider variety of ways.  I love green tea, but not everyone does.  This matcha green tea powder from KissMe Organics is a very fine powder that can be used in smoothies, baking, and gourmet meals.

As far as antioxidants go, a glass of matcha green tea is equal to consuming 10 glasses of regular green tea!  CRAZY!!

I was excited to try this.  I have stopped drinking sodas and am always interested in healthy drinks other than water.  I like green tea already, so I wanted to see what the matcha green tea was like.

I tried one of KissMe Organic's recipes for the Berry Good Morning Smoothie.

KissMe Organics Matcha Green Tea Smoothie www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com

Berry Good Morning Smoothie:

1/2 cup cold orange juice
1 tsp. matcha
2 tsp. warm water
1/3 cup chopped strawberries
1/3 cup blueberries
1/2 banana, sliced

Mix the matcha and warm water until it's blended.  It will be a bit thick, so the warmer water temperature will help blend it the best.

Add all of the ingredients to a blender with some ice and run it until it's the texture you desire.

You can add some more water or orange juice for a thinner smoothie.  (I added 1/2 cup water to mine.)

It was delicious!  I could definitely taste the green tea flavor, but mixed with the fruits, it was nice and refreshing without being overwhelming!

I will be trying just a regular glass of the matcha green tea, as well as, experimenting with a Shakeology blend.

Have you ever heard of this before?  What is your favorite way to use it?

Summer isn't over yet, especially in Florida!  Keep your legs looking and feeling silky smooth ;)

Skintimate's Mandarin Burst Shave Gel does the trick!  The gel smells amazing and reminds me of Jamaica (I sure wish I was back there right now).  No dry or irritated legs for me!

FSU's 1st Home Game!

Tomorrow is FSU's first home game of the season! I am SO excited!

This is the first time in years that I have all-day on Saturday off from work without having to put in extra hours, switch shifts with someone, or rush to the game late.

Last season was so incredible for the Seminoles and I can't wait to see what they can do this year!

Who are you going to be cheering for this weekend?

How To: Pack for a Trip

Packing Travel Tips www.shannongillilan.blogspot.com

I am not one of those people on Pinterest who can pack a week's worth of items in a carry-on bag, although I give them props!  I guess I love my clothes too much ;)

I will tell you how I make packing for a trip a little less stressful though.  If you know me or have been following me for awhile, you know this is something I do quite frequently.

-I start early and plan everything out.  I need to feel prepared or my stress level would be through the roof!

-I plan out my outfits based on the number of days we will be gone and activities we will be doing.  I lay out my outfit, shoes, accessories, and anything else I might need for a certain outfit (such as a certain bra for a dress or a clip for a cami under a racerback tank).

-I try to stay within a color scheme as much as I can.  That way shoes, purses, and basic jewelry will go with everything. That way you aren't trying to pack a pair of shoes for every outfit!

-I have a basic packing list saved on my computer that I print ahead of time and add anything special for a particular trip.  As things are packed, I cross them off and I can make sure nothing is left at home.

-Clothes take up less room in your suitcase if you roll them.

-I mostly use these for winter trips when I have a lot of bulky clothing items, but space saving or vacuum bags are AMAZING! (Here are some similar space saver bags)

-I'm always cold so I throw in a lightweight sweater in my carry on (usually a tote or backpack) for airports and planes, even on our last trip to Jamaica. (Here is one I LOVE)

-Unless it's snowing, flip flops or sandals tend to be the best shoes to travel in if you are going through airport security; easy to take off and out back on.

-Airports can charge a lot of money for food and drinks.  Obviously you can't take liquids through security, but you can prepare ahead of time with snacks.  I stash them in my carry on.  Things like nuts, crackers, freeze dried fruit, protein bars, etc. This is a good idea for road trips too.

-I try to pack travel-sized toiletries if possible.  This is one reason I love my Birchbox subscription!  It saves a lot of space and makes packing easier.  Ulta has a great selection of items (usually by the checkout), as well as Target.

-Another thing I have started to do is check with the hotel ahead of time to find out what toiletries are provided and if they have blow dryers that are not attached to the wall (I have a lot of hair and those tend to take forever to get it dry!).  This saves some space in your suitcase.

-I have a pouch that I pack all of my accessories in with compartments.  It keeps it all together and untangled.  I also have a toiletry bag with most items in ziploc bags just in case anything happens to the items in transport there will be less of a mess.

-Even though I have leopard print luggage, I tie a ribbon on all of our bags.  It's one more step to help you identify your luggage from all of the others at the baggage claim.

P. S. I'm loving this toiletry bag!  It has some many compartments and tons of storage space to keep everything contained in one small pack! I was so excited to get a discount to try it out because now I can't travel without it!

What are your best packing tips and tricks??
